It was built by the Mughal Emperor of India Shah Jahan in the 17th century and the designer was Shah Jahan’s daughter Jahanara. Once it was divided into two canals to reflect the moonlight. The history of this market dates during the foundation of the capital city of Shahjahanabad when Emperor Shah Jahan established the Red Fort. The market consists of almost 1,560 shops and the market was 40 yards wide and 1,520 yards long. Square shaped market looks more beautiful because of a pool at the centre of the complex later the pool was replaced with the clock tower until the 1950s.
