It appears that Kuldhara was a caste group among the Paliwal Brahmins, and the village was named after this caste. These people migrated from Pali to Jaisalmer, and they were Brahmins, commonly called Paliwals. It is said that the Paliwal Brahmin community was very intelligent and wealthy.

The Paliwal Brahmins had a well-organized social structure. They were famous for their advanced, unique agricultural techniques and excellent business acumen. Despite being complete in lifestyle, what was happened that the whole village got empty in one night. Various scenarios surround the abandonment and departure of the Paliwal community from this village. The most popular and widely believed legend involves the Paliwal Brahmins and the curse they allegedly placed on the village. However, there are other theories as well, which provide alternate explanations for the village’s abandonment.

One theory suggests that Kuldhara was abandoned due to severe water scarcity. As we all know that Paliwal Brahmins were mostly traders and farmers. Being located in the Thar Desert, water scarcity was a constant problem for the village. It is believed that the water level in the area dropped rapidly, making it impossible for the villagers to maintain their agricultural practices. This led to mass migration from the village in search of greener pastures.

Another theory suggests that this community left this place due to the prevailing political situation. At that time, Jaisalmer was under constant attacks and invasions by neighboring kingdoms.s, and living in such a condition was very hard. It is believed that the Paliwal Brahmins had to leave the village to escape the clutches of the marauding armies, who often ransacked and looted the area. So they left this place to save the life and wealth of their family.

In 1825 people from the village and 83 nearby villages suddenly disappeared in the dark of night and have not been seen since. Once a prosperous village and home to over 1,500 people and about 400 houses, it is now a deserted and abandoned ghost village. Some historical records suggest that the population of the village declined gradually.

The sudden disappearance of more than 1,500 people without a trace left historians puzzled. Today the place is under the protection of the Archaeological Survey of India, which maintains the city as a heritage site of Rajasthan.
